Bulgarian customs seize cocaine, gold worth 1.43 mln euros

SOFIA, Feb. 25 (Xinhua) -- Bulgarian authorities have seized a batch of cocaine and gold worth a total of 1.43 million euros (1.69 million U.S. dollars) and arrested three suspects, the National Customs Agency (NCA) said on Wednesday.

The illegal goods were intercepted on Sunday when a truck attempted to leave Bulgaria at the Kapitan Andreevo checkpoint on the country's border with Trkiye, the NCA said in a press release.

The truck driver claimed that he was transporting flowers from the Netherlands to Trkiye via Bulgaria. However, a thorough inspection revealed that 11.18 kg of cocaine, split into 10 packets, was hidden in the driver's cab, the NCA said.

Moreover, three packages containing four gold bars weighing a total of 5,199 grams were found in the pockets of the driver's jacket, according to the NCA.

The truck driver, in addition to two other individuals involved in the case, have been detained, and an investigation is underway.
