5 injured in explosion on Frontex vessel in southeastern Greece

ATHENS, March 16 (Xinhua) -- Five people were injured on Monday afternoon after a vessel operated by the European Border and Coast Guard Agency (Frontex) exploded near the Greek island of Kastellorizo in the southeastern Aegean Sea, Greece's national broadcaster ERT reported.

Five people were on board the vessel, including four Estonian nationals and one Greek national. All were injured in the incident, among them Estonia's ambassador to Greece.

One of the injured suffered a serious head injury and is being transferred to a hospital in Athens for treatment.

Initial information suggested that the boat capsized before the explosion occurred.

Authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the incident. Preliminary reports indicate that the vessel was not engaged in an operational mission at the time of the incident.
